The short answer

What is Generative Engine Optimization?

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), also called AI SEO, is the practice of structuring a business’s website and online presence so that AI search engines — ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity — recognize the business as a credible source and name it in their answers. Where traditional SEO competes for a position in a list of links, GEO competes to be part of the answer itself.

The difference matters more than it sounds. When someone asked Google "best SEO company in Edison NJ" five years ago, they got ten links and clicked one. Today a growing share of those searches end with an AI-written answer that names two or three businesses — and the searcher never scrolls to the links at all.

If your business is not one of the names in that answer, you are invisible for that search, no matter where you rank organically. That is the problem GEO solves.

The good news for New Jersey businesses: almost nobody local is doing this work yet. The window to claim these answers is open right now, and it will not stay open long.

GEO is not a different job from SEO

It is the same discipline, extended. The technical foundation, the content quality, the authority signals — AI engines lean on all of it. What changes is the emphasis:

Clear, factual answers instead of keyword-stuffed prose
Structured data so machines can parse who you are
A consistent entity across the whole web
Third-party sources that confirm your claims
Content written to be quoted, not just ranked

Why now

Your customers are already asking AI about you

Not hypothetically. Right now, someone in your service area is typing "who is the best [your service] near me" into ChatGPT instead of Google, and getting back a short list of names. Someone else is searching Google and reading the AI Overview at the top without ever scrolling past it.

Neither of those people sees your ranking. They see an answer. And the businesses inside that answer were chosen by systems that read the web very differently from a human customer.

The engines

Five systems. Five different ways of choosing who to name.

Each AI engine picks its sources differently. Optimizing for one does not automatically win you the others.

Highest volume

Google AI Overviews

The AI summary that now sits above the organic results on many searches. It pulls from Google’s own index and cites a handful of pages it considers clear and trustworthy.

What we do about it: Direct answers near the top of each page, FAQ blocks, clean schema, and content that matches how people phrase the question.

Largest audience

ChatGPT

Answers from training data, and browses live for current questions. Well established, frequently referenced businesses have an advantage.

What we do about it: Entity consistency everywhere, presence in the directories and profiles it reaches for, and factual content it can quote without hedging.

Google ecosystem

Google Gemini

Leans on Google’s index and Knowledge Graph, which makes your Google Business Profile and entity data unusually important.

What we do about it: Knowledge Graph alignment, GBP optimization, Organization and LocalBusiness schema that agrees with every other listing you have.

Rising fast

Anthropic Claude

Favors clear, factual, well-structured writing with visible authorship, and is cautious about sources it cannot verify.

What we do about it: Named author bylines with real credentials, plain factual writing, and citations that check out.

Citation-heavy

Perplexity

Retrieves live and shows its sources, with a visible preference for authoritative domains and reference sites.

What we do about it: Third-party authority: Crunchbase, Wikidata, quality directories, and earned mentions in publications that Perplexity already trusts.

What GEO work looks like

Six things we do to get you cited

None of this is theory. It is the same checklist we run on every New Jersey client.

01

Entity foundation

One name, one address, one phone number, one story — identical across your site, Google, LinkedIn, Crunchbase and every directory. Mixed signals are the single biggest reason AI engines skip a business.

02

Schema markup

Organization, LocalBusiness, Person, Service and FAQ structured data so machines can read exactly who you are, what you do, and where you do it — without guessing.

03

Definitional content

Pages that answer the question in the first hundred words, in language an AI can lift cleanly. This is the format that gets quoted.

04

Question & answer structure

Real customer questions as headings, direct answers underneath, FAQ schema attached. It maps almost exactly to how AI engines assemble answers.

05

Third-party corroboration

Anyone can claim to be the best in New Jersey. AI engines look for outside confirmation — reviews, citations, directory profiles, and earned mentions in sources they already trust.

06

AI visibility reporting

We ask the engines about your service and your area on a schedule, and show you whether you are named — and who is being named instead.

SEO vs GEO

How AI search changes the job

Traditional SEO still matters — GEO does not replace it. But the goal, the target and the scoreboard are all different.

  Traditional SEO Generative Engine Optimization
The goal Rank in the list of blue links Be named inside the answer itself
The target Google and Bing ChatGPT, AI Overviews, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity
What wins Keywords, links, technical health Entity clarity, structured data, factual writing, outside corroboration
Content style Written to rank for a phrase Written to be quoted verbatim
Authority signal Backlinks Backlinks plus consistent presence across sources AI trusts
How you measure it Rankings, traffic, conversions Whether the engines name you — and how often
Who is doing it in NJ Every agency Almost nobody. Yet.

FAQ

Questions about AI search

GEO is new enough that most of what is written about it is hype. Here are straight answers.

What is AI SEO or GEO, in one sentence?
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of structuring your website and online presence so AI search engines like ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity recognize your business as credible and name it in their answers.
Does GEO replace traditional SEO?
No, and be careful with anyone who says it does. AI engines lean heavily on the same foundations as traditional search: a technically sound site, quality content, and real authority. GEO extends that work rather than replacing it. Every TJB WebMedia plan includes both.
How long does GEO take to work?
It varies more than traditional SEO, because each engine updates on its own schedule. Schema and content changes can be picked up quickly by engines that retrieve live, such as AI Overviews and Perplexity. Recognition inside models like ChatGPT tends to build more slowly, as your entity becomes consistent across the web. [VERIFY typical timelines with David before publishing a promise here.]
Can you guarantee ChatGPT will recommend my business?
No. Nobody can, and anyone promising it is selling something. What we can do is make your business the clearest, best-corroborated answer available for your service in your part of New Jersey — which is what these systems reward. We also measure it, so you can see whether it is working.
How do you measure whether it is working?
We ask the engines directly, on a schedule, using the questions your customers actually ask — and record whether your business gets named, and who gets named instead. That goes in your monthly report alongside rankings and traffic.
Is GEO an extra cost on top of SEO?
Not with us. AI search optimization is included in every TJB WebMedia SEO engagement as standard. Some agencies sell it as a premium add-on. We think that is backwards — it is simply part of doing search properly in 2026.
My business is small and local. Does this matter for me?
It matters more, not less. Local questions are exactly what people ask assistants: who is good, who is nearby, who should I call. Those answers name two or three businesses. Being one of them is worth far more to a local business than a national brand.
