LOCAL SEO

Local SEO Services That Put You in the Map Pack

Local SEO is how a New Jersey business shows up when someone nearby searches for what it sells — in Google Maps, in the local pack of three businesses at the top of the results, and in the "near me" searches happening on phones all over your service area. TJB WebMedia has been doing this work for NJ businesses for 20+ years, from our office in Piscataway.

The short answer

What is local SEO?

Local SEO is the practice of optimizing a business so it appears in the search results people see when they are looking for something nearby — primarily Google Maps and the local pack, the block of three businesses that sits at the top of local searches. It combines Google Business Profile optimization, consistent business listings across the web, customer reviews, and location-specific content on the website itself.

Why it matters here

In New Jersey, local is the whole game

New Jersey is dense. Your customers are not searching for "plumber in New Jersey" — they are searching for a plumber in Edison, or Piscataway, or wherever they happen to be standing. And most of them never scroll past the map.

That block of three businesses at the top takes the majority of the clicks and almost all of the phone calls. Ranking fourth in the map pack is functionally the same as not existing — because there is no fourth. There is a "more businesses" link almost nobody taps.

Local SEO is the work of being one of those three.

How Google decides

Three things determine who makes the map pack

Google states its local ranking factors publicly. There is no mystery here — only the work of doing them better than the business down the road.

01

Relevance

How well your business matches what the person searched for. A half-filled Google Business Profile tells Google very little about what you actually do.

What we can influence: Complete profile, correct primary and secondary categories, real service descriptions, and website content that matches the search.

02

Distance

How far you are from the searcher, or from the area they searched. This is the one nobody can fake — and the reason buying a fake address gets businesses suspended.

What we can influence: An accurate location, a properly defined service area, and location pages for the towns you genuinely serve.

03

Prominence

How well known and well regarded your business is — reviews, mentions across the web, links, and your overall authority.

What we can influence: Review strategy, consistent citations everywhere, local links, and the organic SEO that feeds prominence.

What we do

Six pieces of local SEO work

Weighted to whatever your audit says is holding you back — not a fixed checklist we run on everybody.

01

Google Business Profile

The single highest-leverage asset in local SEO, and the one most businesses half-fill and forget.

  • Categories, services & attributes
  • Photos & posts
  • Q&A management
  • Suspension & edit monitoring
02

Citations & NAP

Your name, address and phone number, identical everywhere Google looks.

  • Directory audit & cleanup
  • Duplicate listing removal
  • Industry-specific citations
  • Ongoing consistency checks
03

Reviews

The prominence signal customers actually read before calling you.

  • Review generation systems
  • Response strategy
  • Review velocity over time
  • Handling the bad ones properly
04

Service-area pages

A real page for each town you serve — written, not spun.

  • Town-level pages that earn their place
  • Genuine local content
  • Internal linking structure
  • No thin doorway pages
05

Local schema

Structured data telling machines exactly who and where you are.

  • LocalBusiness markup
  • Service & area served
  • Hours, geo, contact data
  • Validation before launch
06

Local links & mentions

Authority from sources that are actually local to you.

  • Chambers & local orgs
  • Community & sponsorships
  • Local press
  • Industry associations

Do you need this?

Signs your local SEO needs work

If more than a couple of these sound familiar, local SEO is probably the fastest win available to your business right now.

You rank on Google but never appear in the map
Competitors with worse websites outrank you locally
You show up in one town but not the next one over
Your Google Business Profile has not been touched in a year
Your address or phone number is different on different sites
You have far fewer reviews than the businesses beating you
You get found by people who already know your name, and nobody else

The good news

Local SEO is usually the fastest-moving part of search. Because it leans on your Google Business Profile, your listings and your reviews, real changes can show up in weeks rather than the months a competitive organic campaign takes.

It is also the part most of your competitors are neglecting. A profile that is fully filled out, actively managed and backed by a steady flow of reviews beats a bigger business that set theirs up once in 2019 and forgot about it.

The free audit tells you exactly where you stand in the map pack for your town — and who is beating you.

FAQ

Questions about local SEO

What NJ business owners ask before starting.

Part of our full NJ SEO services.

What is the difference between local SEO and regular SEO?
Regular SEO is about ranking in the standard list of results. Local SEO is about appearing in Google Maps and the local pack — the three businesses shown at the top of a nearby search. They overlap heavily, but local SEO leans on things organic SEO does not use much: your Google Business Profile, your reviews, your listings, and your physical proximity to the searcher.
How long does local SEO take to work?
Faster than organic SEO in most cases. Google Business Profile work, citation cleanup and review generation can move the needle within weeks, and meaningful map pack improvement often shows up inside 90 days. Highly competitive towns and categories take longer. [VERIFY typical timelines with David.]
Do I need a physical address to rank locally?
You need a real location Google can verify, but it does not have to be a storefront. Service-area businesses — plumbers, contractors, mobile services — can rank using a properly configured service area. What you cannot do is invent an address or rent a mailbox to fake proximity. Google catches it and suspends profiles for it.
How many reviews do I need?
There is no magic number. What matters is having enough to look credible against the businesses you are competing with, and getting them steadily rather than in one suspicious burst. If the top three in your town have 80 reviews and you have 6, that gap is part of why you are not there.
Can I do local SEO myself?
Some of it, yes — and you should. Fill in your Google Business Profile completely, post photos, ask happy customers for reviews. That alone puts you ahead of a lot of businesses. Where people usually get stuck is citation cleanup, service-area page strategy, schema, and figuring out why a competitor keeps outranking them anyway.
What if I serve several towns?
Then you need a real page for each one that earns its existence — not the same page with the town name swapped, which Google has recognized and discounted for years. We build genuine local pages for the areas that matter most to your business, in priority order.
Does local SEO help with AI search too?
Yes, and increasingly so. When someone asks ChatGPT or Google’s AI for a recommendation near them, the systems lean on the same signals: your Google Business Profile, consistent information across the web, reviews, and clear location data. Good local SEO is most of the foundation for AI search optimization.
