Website Redesign

Website Redesign for New Jersey Businesses

A website redesign is the process of rebuilding an existing site so it looks current, loads fast, converts better โ€” and keeps every ranking it already has. That last part is where most redesigns go wrong. TJB WebMedia has rebuilt New Jersey business websites for 20+ years from our office in Piscataway, and we map every old URL before a single page goes live.

The short answer

What is a website redesign?

A website redesign is the rebuilding of an existing website to improve its design, speed, usability and search performance, while preserving the search rankings and traffic the old site had earned. It differs from building a new site because the existing URLs, content and authority have to be carried across deliberately — through redirect mapping and content auditing — rather than started from scratch.

The thing nobody warns you about

Most redesigns lose traffic. It is avoidable.

A business owner signs off on a beautiful new website. It launches. Three weeks later the phone stops ringing, and nobody can explain why.

What happened is almost always the same: the URLs changed and nobody mapped the old ones to the new ones. Every page Google had indexed now returns a 404. Years of accumulated ranking authority evaporates overnight, and the agency that built it has already invoiced and moved on.

It is entirely preventable. It just requires someone who thinks about search before the design is signed off, not after the site is live.

Protecting what you have

Three things that decide whether a redesign costs you traffic

Get these right and a redesign lifts your rankings. Get them wrong and it buries them.

01

URL mapping

If page addresses change without redirects, every link and ranking pointing at the old address is lost. This is the single most common cause of post-redesign traffic collapse.

What we do: we crawl the existing site, export every indexed URL from Search Console, and map each one to its new home before launch.

02

Content preservation

Pages that rank are often not the ones you would guess. Deleting an old page because it looks dated can remove your best-performing asset.

What we do: we audit which pages actually earn traffic and rankings, then keep, improve or merge them — never delete blindly.

03

Technical continuity

A new site can quietly break things the old one had right: schema, canonical tags, sitemaps, or an accidental noindex left over from staging.

What we do: we rebuild schema and technical SEO deliberately, then verify indexing in Search Console after launch rather than assuming.

Do you need one?

Signs your site needs rebuilding

A redesign is worth it when the site is actively working against you — not just because it looks a few years old.

It looks dated next to your competitors
It is slow, or awkward to use on a phone
You cannot update it yourself without calling someone
It was built on a platform you have outgrown
It gets visitors but almost no enquiries
It is not secure, or still running on HTTP
A previous redesign lost you rankings you never recovered

When we will tell you not to

Sometimes the honest answer is that your site does not need rebuilding. If the structure is sound and the real problem is speed, content or visibility, a redesign is an expensive way to solve the wrong thing.

We will say so. We would rather fix what is actually broken — and keep you as a client for years — than sell you a rebuild you did not need.

What’s included

What a redesign with us involves

Every rebuild follows the same sequence, because skipping steps is how rankings get lost.

01

Audit first

We find out what is working before we change anything.

  • Full URL & content crawl
  • Which pages actually rank
  • Traffic & conversion review
  • Competitor comparison
02

New design

Modern, mobile-first, built around your brand.

  • Custom layouts, not templates
  • Mobile-first by default
  • Your brand, properly applied
  • Review and revise until right
03

SEO rebuilt

Structure and schema done deliberately, not inherited.

  • Clean URL structure
  • Titles, headings, meta
  • Schema markup
  • Internal linking
04

Redirect map

The step most agencies skip, and the reason redesigns fail.

  • Every old URL mapped
  • 301s tested before launch
  • Search Console export
  • Nothing left 404ing
05

Speed & Core Web Vitals

Fast on a phone, not just on your desk.

  • Core Web Vitals targets
  • Image optimization
  • Caching & hosting advice
  • Real-device testing
06

Launch & monitor

The work does not end when the site goes live.

  • Post-launch indexing checks
  • Rankings monitored
  • Training for your team
  • Fixes if anything moves

FAQ

Questions about redesigns

What NJ business owners ask before rebuilding.

Part of our full NJ web design services.

Will a redesign hurt my Google rankings?
Not if it is done properly — and it is the first thing we plan for. Rankings are lost in redesigns when URLs change without redirects, or when pages that were ranking get deleted. We export every indexed URL from Search Console, map each one to its new home, and test the redirects before launch. Done this way, a redesign usually improves rankings rather than costing them.
How long does a website redesign take?
Most rebuilds run [4 to 8 weeks – VERIFY] from the first audit to launch. The variable is almost always content: if your copy and images are ready we move quickly, and if we are helping produce them it takes longer. Larger sites with hundreds of pages need more time for the URL mapping alone.
Can you keep my existing content?
Usually, and often we should. Pages that rank are frequently not the ones you would expect, so we audit what actually earns traffic before deciding what to keep, improve, merge or retire. Nothing gets deleted because it looks dated — only because the data says it is not working.
My site is on Wix or Squarespace. Can you move it?
Yes, and we usually recommend it for a business that depends on being found. Those platforms are rented — you cannot take the site with you and your SEO options are limited by what they allow. We rebuild on WordPress, which you own outright, and map every old URL across so nothing is lost in the move.
Do I need a redesign, or just better SEO?
Often just better SEO. If your site is structurally sound and the real problem is speed, content or visibility, a redesign is an expensive way to fix the wrong thing. The free review tells you honestly which it is — and we would rather say so than sell you a rebuild you do not need.
What happens to my old site during the rebuild?
It stays live and working the entire time. We build the new site separately, test it fully, and only switch over once the redirects are mapped and verified. There is no window where your business is offline or invisible.
Who owns the site when it is finished?
You do, completely. Your domain, your hosting, your WordPress install, your Google accounts, your content. If we ever part ways, you take all of it with you and it keeps working.
